Our Top Tips On Caring For Permed Hair

Getting a perm is a long-term commitment which involves some special care for your hair. Chemically permed hair, just like chemically straightened hair, requires special attention and if you do not provide your hair with the needed care, you are risking your beautiful curls to start falling flat within a few days. If you would like to know how to maintain your freshly permed locks, make sure you carry on reading.

  1. Avoid washing your hair straight away

For the first 24-72 hours after you get a perm, don’t wash or condition your hair. Keeping water away from your hair is very important, as this can deactivate your perm and make the curls fall apart. To be sure, ask your stylist how long you should wait until washing your hair – as the length of time may differ depending on the type of perm you have got. If you really need to get rid of the grease in your roots, consider using a dry shampoo in the meantime.

  1. Don’t dye your hair straight after

If you would like your perm to last, dyeing your hair right after your perm is not a great idea. This is because perming uses some very strong, harsh chemicals that will majorly dry out anyone’s hair. Therefore, if you choose to dye your hair right after that, you would not be giving your hair enough time to recover its lost moisture. In order to keep your perm at its very best condition, we advise waiting at least a month before carrying out any other treatments to your hair. Perming fully dyed hair is also often better than perming highlighted hair, which could go frizzy pretty quickly – but make sure you ask your hairstylist before committing to anything.

  1. Avoid styling tools that use heat

Any heat, especially if used to straighten out curly hair, is super damaging to your curls. You need to avoid using heated styling tools that can damage the hair and loosen the perm. However, if you must use heated styling tools, apply a thermal protectant or conditioning product first – a diffuser attached to your blow dryer can also help protect permed hair. It disperses the air and doesn’t disturb the curl as much as regular blow-drying.

  1. Use the right products

When styling your perm, make sure you choose styling products that are alcohol-free to keep your permed hair from drying out. Moisturising shampoos and conditioners are a great option, especially if they are designed for permed hair. Also, make sure to wash your hair using normal water, rather than hot water, as this can dry your hair out and damage the cuticles – which will cause your hair to look dull, frizzy-looking and brittle. An excellent product to use is the American Dream Regenerating GARLIC SHAMPOO Regular Size, 500ml – which is designed to hydrate, nourish and strengthen your hair follicles. It will also add significant shine and body to hair that may have been chemically damaged.
